The Challenge

Summary

A fragmented Food & Agriculture sector needed a unified, secure collaboration platform — built with stakeholders, not just for them.

The Food & Agriculture sector is a complex, highly disparate system that struggled to coordinate and modernize to address emerging needs and challenges as the food system became more interconnected. This need, coupled with well-entrenched information sharing silos, required a unique approach to collaboration — focusing on secure, on-demand resource allocation to enable cross-agency collaboration.

Stakeholders and end users needed equal voices in the development of the platform to ensure adoption. The solution had to work for federal agencies, state departments, tribal organizations, academic institutions, and private industry — simultaneously, securely, and at scale.

Fragmented Systems

Dozens of disconnected tools across federal, state, and local agencies with no shared data layer.

Entrenched Silos

Information sharing was manual, slow, and inconsistent — creating dangerous gaps during outbreak response.

Multi-Stakeholder Complexity

Federal, state, tribal, military, academic, and private industry all needed equal access and voice.

Compliance & Security

Any solution had to meet federal security standards while remaining accessible to thousands of users.

The Result

Outcome

From a small pilot in 2005 to a mission-critical national platform — FoodSHIELD is now the standard operating procedure for federal food safety agencies.

FoodSHIELD platform in use

Users from federal, state, local, tribal, military, academic, and private industry have grown FoodSHIELD from a small pilot in 2005 to a wide-ranging collaboration and data exchange platform. Now considered mission critical to food & ag users across the country, it has earned official Standard Operating Procedure status for federal agencies.

FoodSHIELD serves 30,000 users globally with more than a million minutes annually of webinar collaboration enabled for real-time information sharing via the 3,000 working groups and tens of thousands of documents shared.

“FoodSHIELD has become the backbone of how we coordinate food safety response across agencies. The NexSuite platform gave us the collaboration, data sharing, and emergency response capabilities we needed — all in one place.”
